All that Glitters

I will never forget the first time I met Maggie. Her and her husband had lived in the same house their whole life. Maggie and Tom had me out to their house to talk about updates that they wanted to do. Maggie was wearing the cutest sparkly slippers. As I got to know her better I realized that she sparkled from the inside out. Her sweet personality lites up a room and everything that we selected had to have a little, “Wow” factor, a little sparkle.

The motivation for the renovation was two fold. Most importantly her husband needed a bathroom renovation so that his shower would have a sturdy seat and grab bars for safety. And since she would have contractors at their house she might as well get the kitchen facelift that she had been dreaming of for a lot of years.

My favorite part of the renovation was the one original element that we decided to KEEP. In the front entry there was a gorgeous crystal light fixture. I thought it honored the home to keep it, and it was so beautiful we would have a hard time doing better with a new light fixture. The day I came home from her house when we had decided to keep the light fixture I received one of my favorite lighting catalogues in the mail. In it they had featured a “antique reproduction cut crystal” light fixture. It was a copy of the original (and more beautiful) light in Maggie’s front entry. Receiving that catalogue was very affirming that sometimes knowing what to keep is just as important as knowing what to update.
